I really like Das Racist. The jokes are funny, they have flow, I met Heems in New York a few times and he was a cool dude. They seem like down to earth, intelligent guys. But some things about Sit Down, Man are bugging me.
- If you know me you know I like Teengirl Fantasy. But Commercial doesn’t quite work for me. First of all it’s weird hearing it right after Town Business, second of all the singing parts sound lame, third of all this “it’s 1991/92/93/94/95/96/97/98” thing is so weak it’s pathetic. They follow that part up with a sick rhyme but by that time the singing/9x parts make me next.
- The Keepaway song is similar. Very strange to hear next to more conventional rap beats.
- fashion party starts with that long ass scene, then some chick singing- another “you’re not rapping by 0:40 so I’m pressing next” thing
- on hahaha jk? “we’re not joking just joking we are joking just joking we’re not joking” just rap already
- puerto rican cousins is pretty good but “we are family at least that’s what we look like we should be” see above. also the “like puerto rican cousins” baby robot vocal is stupid. but the rapping is tight here.
what i liked:
- all tan everything
- most of puerto rican cousins
- town business is real good, i like the guitar playing throughout, at first the 73x “ill” references was annoying to me but it flows well upon repeat listen so i’m down
- luv it mayne: my uncle said if you gon bawwllllll- this is really sick. (vs. we are family… just joking we are joking… 92/93/94) the feat. verses are REALLY GOOD and yeah this just works
- rapping 2 u is pretty good
- rooftop is a fucking banger, this is what i play when i enter the office and leave for the day, hype song of hype songs
- irresponsible is okay but they could do more rapping and less “baby like me so irresponsible”ing
- return to innocence- this beat is really cool, the weird voice in the background, then the drums kick in and it works
- roc marciano joint goes hard and this is my second favorite off the album
- diplo is pretty great
- sit down man is great, really good beat and the flow is exceptional
anyway everything about this album is great as is par for the short history of das racist (weird interesting references from all over, internet-aware etc., plain good rhymes) but those tracks that bug me bug me so much i end up skipping them every time because it just pisses me off. making this more like a great ep than an okay mixtape for me.
also, i should mention i played shut up, dude almost constantly my last 4 days in new york- i had to sit in starbucks for 45 minutes to download it- and every day for the next 3-4 weeks. i am decidedly pro-das racist
